How It Works
ClearCounsel has two tools. Use them together before and after any AI-assisted legal work.
Tool 01
Redact Before You Paste

Open the tool and go to Tab 1
Go to tool.clearcounsel.app and make sure you're on the Redact Before You Paste tab. No login required.

Choose your detection categories
At the top you'll see color-coded toggles for each category ClearCounsel detects — SSNs, email addresses, phone numbers, dates, street addresses, case numbers, and financial account data. All are on by default. Toggle off any you don't need.

Paste your document text
Copy the text from your legal document — contract, case notes, client communication, court filing, whatever you're working with — and paste it into the text area. Your document never leaves your browser. Everything is processed locally on your device.

Click Analyze & Detect PII
ClearCounsel scans the text and highlights every detected item in a color that matches its category. Red for SSNs, amber for emails, purple for phone numbers, and so on. You'll see exactly what was found and where.

Review the highlighted view
The default view shows your original text with all detected items highlighted. Review it carefully — ClearCounsel uses pattern-matching and may not catch everything, particularly proper names or unusual formatting. Always do a manual check.

Switch to Redacted Output and copy
Click Redacted Output to see the clean version. Each detected item is replaced with a labeled tag like [EMAIL_ADDRESSES] or [SOCIAL_SECURITY_NUMBERS]. Click Copy Redacted Text and paste it into your AI tool.
💡 Pro tip
If you're working with a document that contains a lot of client names or proprietary terms that the tool won't catch, do a manual find-and-replace in your text editor first, then run it through ClearCounsel for the structured PII.

Disclose After You File

Go to Tab 2 — Disclose After You File
Click the Disclose After You File tab at the top of the tool. Use this any time AI was used to help draft, research, or review content that will be submitted to a court.

Select your court information
Choose your court type from the dropdown — U.S. District Court, State Trial Court, Bankruptcy Court, and more. Then select your state or jurisdiction. Optionally enter the specific court name for more precise language.

Select your filing type
Choose the type of document you're filing — Motion, Brief, Complaint, Response, Discovery Requests, Expert Declaration, and more. This helps ClearCounsel generate language appropriate to the document.

Select the AI tools you used
Check every AI tool that was used in drafting or researching the filing — ChatGPT, Claude, Westlaw AI, Lexis+ AI, Microsoft Copilot, Harvey, CoCounsel, Gemini, Paxton AI, Perplexity, or Other. You can select multiple.

Confirm attorney review
Toggle on Attorney Human Review to confirm that supervising counsel independently reviewed and verified all AI-generated content. This is included in the generated disclosure language.

Generate your disclosure
Click Generate Disclosure Statement. ClearCounsel produces court-appropriate disclosure language in seconds. Review it, click Copy Disclosure, and paste it directly into your filing. If you want different phrasing, click Regenerate.
💡 Pro tip
Always have the supervising attorney review the generated disclosure before it goes into any filing. Requirements vary by judge and court — check any applicable standing orders for your specific courtroom. When in doubt, disclose more rather than less.
